Plastic Rose (1994, 2014) is a play set in a mental asylum, or, the mental asylum of the world. There are two productions here: one with Shogo Ota in 1994, and one at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2014. The co-production in 1994 was a collaboration with Ota, each of us working with the same set, directing our own production in California and in Japan respectively, and then bringing Ota’s production to California to run in tandem with our’s, and then taking our’s to Osaka to run in tandem with Ota’s. At the end of this run Ota asked me to direct more of his plays, and gave me several of them that had been translated into English.
