The Flies

The Flies, Sartre – 2003 Stratford Festival of Canada

The production questioned the bombings of Iraq, specifically the ‘highway of destruction’ with the United States testing new weapons of destruction. Sartre’s flies became civilians wearing gas masks, asking who are we? and what is left when chemical warfare has destroyed our ways of living? We look like flies, maybe survive for awhile at that level, what are we reduced to and are there other options?  The play appeared to me as Sartre’s take on The Eumenides.
