As one of the few artistic directors working not only with new plays but also new writers of plays, I find dramaturgy a key way of thinking through a text and its immediate relations with all aspects of the theatre in its society. With classical texts dramaturgy is important to me because it makes possible a close and challenging relationship with the writer of the play, or with the text itself, to create a play that will work on stage for the particular audience in mind.
More recently I have been working with a number of graduate students and professional practitioners on new and compelling ways of approaching the field.
